Christmas Tree Diving
During the traditional Christmas tree diving ceremony on December 25, the ASBÖ Water Rescue Service in Zell am See gives thanks for a year of accident-free operations and commemorates those who have lost their lives in the lake.
From 5:00 p.m., an illuminated Christmas tree that was previously lowered to a depth of 15 metres is ceremoniously brought back to the surface by the rescue divers. The ceremony is accompanied by traditional brass musicians and an impressive ring of swimmers carrying torches. The mayor and the priest will give brief words of greeting and blessings to you and the rescue teams, before a small fireworks display over the lake brings the event to a close.
For almost five decades, this reflective and atmospheric event has attracted locals and visitors to the Oberschneider Bay between the Grand Hotel and the Zell am See lido. From 4:00 p.m., you can enjoy mulled wine and punch at the punch hut.
Come along – admission is free – and support the water rescue service!

From 23 to 26 July 2026, top trail runners and mountain athletes will gather in the Zell am See-Kaprun region for the The North Face Großglockner Ultra-Trail.
The race takes runners around Austria’s highest mountain, the Großglockner, through the impressive Hohe Tauern National Park: 110 km, more than 6,500 metres of elevation gain, 14 glaciers, 3 federal states and around 300 peaks above 3,000 metres. With five different races, the event is once again a highlight of the Alpine trail-running calendar in 2026.
